Samosir Island is located in the middle of Lake Toba, a large lake on the island of Sumatra, which is part of Indonesia. The island covers a surface area of the lake as much as water does. Samosir Island is created about 30,000 years ago during a volcanic eruption. Toba lake itself is being created 75,000 years ago is also due to volcanic eruptions.
