Parthenon, Acropolis

Parthenon, Acropolis

Parthenon on the Acropolis is one of the most famous buildings in the world, and a visit to Athens is not complete without visiting this temple. Construction of the Parthenon began in 447 BC, replacing an older temple destroyed by the Persians, and was completed in 432 BC. The purpose of the Parthenon was to house a large statue of Athena parthenos made of ivory, silver and gold. First in the 5th century, the statue was looted by one of the Roman Emperor, and taken to Constantinople, where he later destroyed.
